What Is Traveler’s Diarrhea?

Travelers’ diarrhea may be accompanied by other symptoms such as vomiting or fever. It is more common when traveling to certain destinations where the infrastructure is poor and the climate is hot.

Travelers’ diarrhea is  that which occurs when we travel to a region or country with different hygienic and health conditions than our place of origin. It is caused by infection with bacteria or viruses found in the water or food we eat.

In recent years, tourism has evolved. Currently, many people choose as their destination countries which do not yet have the adequate infrastructure. Or exotic places where sanitary and hygienic conditions are not the best.

In fact, although the incidence of traveler’s diarrhea has decreased, it is estimated to affect around 40% of travelers. It usually happens suddenly while traveling or just on the way home.

What is traveler’s diarrhea?

Travelers’ diarrhea occurs when, while traveling to a specific country, we are exposed to certain microorganisms that we do not have at home. It can be a virus, bacteria or even parasites.

Usually, we get an infection by drinking water that has not been properly treated or disinfected. Indeed, there are many parts of the world where the water quality does not meet standards. However, infection can also occur by ingesting food.

The majority of cases of traveler’s diarrhea are caused by the bacteria Escherichia coliSpecifically, there are certain strains of this bacteria, such as enterohemorrhagic E. coli , which is known to cause a large number of cases as well as more aggressive diarrhea.

Usually, diarrhea appears suddenly. It can occur during the trip and jeopardize the entire program envisaged for this period. Therefore, it is essential to take certain precautions to avoid it. Nevertheless, it can also occur on the return.

In addition to diarrhea,  these infections can also cause other symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. Abdominal cramps and fever are also common. The problem is, if not treated properly, it can lead to dehydration.

What are the risk factors for traveler’s diarrhea?

The first risk factor for contracting traveler’s diarrhea is the destination. As we mentioned, sanitary conditions are very important. In particular the quality of water disinfection.

For this reason,  the countries with the most cases are those of Central America, South America, Africa and Asia. Likewise, travel conditions also play a role. Indeed, if we leave with few resources, in backpack mode, it is easier to ingest a contaminated substance or to stay in unsanitary places.

The season is also important, as infections are more common during the warmer months. In addition, the conditions of each person are also decisive. A person with a weaker immune system is more vulnerable to any infection.

How can we prevent it?

There are some simple tips you can take to prevent traveler’s diarrhea from eating and drinking. It is best to eat foods that are well cooked and served hot. Products that have not been processed, such as unpasteurized dairy products, should be avoided.

For example, try not to consume meals from street stalls. In the case of water,  you should always drink bottled, well-sealed water. Make sure you do not drink tap water, brush your teeth or wash fruit. On the other hand, if you ask for water, make sure it is in the form of a hot drink like tea.

Finally, the most important thing is that, if any of the symptoms mentioned appear, go to the nearest doctor and as soon as possible. Although diarrhea can go away on its own, it can also have serious consequences, such as dehydration.
