5 Tips For Properly Disinfecting Your Mattress

Did you know that, although we usually only do this with the arrival of spring, it is still recommended to turn our mattress once per week to prevent it from deforming?

We spend a good part of our life in our bed, even if we are not necessarily aware of the importance that our mattress has for our health.

The problem is that over time it accumulates dirt that we cannot always see, but also mites, these microscopic beasts that can affect our health.

The sweat of our body, the dust and the dead cells of our skin create an ideal environment for the proliferation of these microorganisms, which are responsible for many allergies and pathologies, in particular respiratory.

Despite this, we don’t necessarily take the time to disinfect it, and we don’t even know how to do it.

Fortunately, this is a household chore that we can do on a regular basis because it is not complicated and does not require the use of expensive products.

In the rest of this article, we will share with you 5 tips that will make your life easier in carrying out this maintenance of your mattress.

1. Turn your mattress regularly

Although turning a mattress does not guarantee its disinfection, it is a good way to ventilate it and prevent it from deforming too quickly.

We recommend that you do this at least once a week. Turn it over double-sided, but don’t forget to reverse the head and the part reserved for your feet as well.

It is not good to leave the mattress in the same position for too long, as it can quickly warp and lose its comfort.

2. Ventilate it regularly

You may have heard this idea before: making your bed in the morning is unhealthy.

If this is such a popular maxim, there is a good reason.

While we don’t recommend letting your bedroom clutter, wait at least an hour or two before making your bed after getting up.

Dust mites proliferate more easily in a hot and humid environment, which they logically find in a mattress.

The ideal is to remove sheets and blankets regularly so that the mattress can be well ventilated every morning.

In addition, it is essential to ventilate your room well to eliminate any presence of humidity.

3. Use baking soda

Applying baking soda and hydrogen peroxide is a great way to completely disinfect a mattress.

These products have antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties, which reduce the presence of many types of microorganisms.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons of baking soda (30 g)
  • 1 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide (250 ml)
  • 2 drops of liquid soap

Utensils

  • 1 bottle with spray
  • 1 clean cloth

How should you proceed?

  • Mix the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide until the powder is completely dissolved.
  • Incorporate the liquid soap and continue to mix, to obtain a homogeneous product.
  • Pour the preparation into a bottle with spray, then spray the mixture on the mattress.
  • Use the amount you think is necessary to clean the surface of your mattress, paying particular attention to any dark stains that may be present on your mattress.
  • Wait a few minutes for the mixture to penetrate well, then rub with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Remove any baking soda residue with a vacuum cleaner.
  • Repeat this at least once a week.

4. Use tea tree essential oil

The essential oil of tea tree is an exceptional agent to disinfect and eliminate the bad odors present on your mattress.

Its properties alter the environment necessary for mites to survive, while allowing the elimination of many bacteria.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup of baking soda (100 g)
  • 8 drops of tea tree essential oil
  • ¼ cup of white vinegar (62 ml)

How should you proceed?

  • Combine baking soda and tea tree essential oil. Spray the solution onto the surface of the mattress.
  • Rub the mixture with a brush, then apply a little white vinegar to achieve an effervescent effect.
  • Let the product sit for an hour, then use a vacuum cleaner to remove any baking soda residue.

5. Wash your sheets and mattress pads

Sheets and mattresses are essential to protect the mattress and prevent it from deteriorating too quickly.

However, they get dirty easily and absorb a very large part of sweat, dust and dirt.

This is why it is essential to wash them at least once a week, using disinfectants.

In addition, it is important to opt for sheets made of waterproof fabrics, easy to wash and which allow them to breathe.
