5 Homemade Solutions To Remove Hair Dye

If when applying hair dye the result is not what you expected, you can take advantage of the properties of some natural ingredients to facilitate the elimination of these colors.

Choosing the right coloring can be a complicated task as there is always the risk that the color will not be what you expected, but luckily there are options to remove the dye if the results are not what you expected.

Below, we’ll discuss five homemade alternatives to remove some of the applied dye so you don’t have to resort to scissors or fading. Don’t miss it!

Why remove hair dye?

Keep in mind that dyes generally don’t apply to blank “canvas” or light blonde hair.

The hair, of course, is not completely even, although it appears to be. It has lighter parts and darker areas and of course that influences the result.

Therefore, the latter depends on the natural color of the hair, its highlights, dark areas, remnants of previous dyes, etc.

If there is no match between the desired color and the result after applying the product, it is normal to feel discomfort and want to do something.

There are then 2 options:

  • Wait 15 days  to see if the dye lightens a bit with the usual washes.
  • Sweep off the dye. This procedure, even when done “at home”, can be very aggressive. It is therefore generally not the most recommended option from an expert point of view.

Some of the methods used to “sweep” the dye are as follows which we will discuss.

1. Vegetable oil

Olive oil or coconut oil have moisturizing properties to treat damaged hair. If used a little hot, they  will help the dye to fall off bit by bit  while moisturizing the hair.

We must not forget that most of the remedies used to bleach hair tend to dry out hair.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of olive or coconut oil (500 ml)
  • 2 cups of water (500 ml)

How to do ?

  • Heat a container with coconut oil or olive oil in a double boiler until hot.
  • Wash hair thoroughly and remove excess water.
  • Apply the oil from root to tip, wrap your hair in a towel and let sit for an hour.
  • Rinse it off with lukewarm water.

2. Vitamin C pills

This remedy is known to lower the coloring tone by at least 2 levels without damaging the natural color of the hair. It is important to note that this remedy does not work when the hair is dyed with dyes that contain ammonia.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle of shampoo
  • 2 tablespoons of water (30 ml)
  • 3 effervescent vitamin C pills

How to do ?

  • Dissolve the vitamin C pills in a little water.
  • Pour the mixture into the shampoo bottle and use it every time you go to wash your hair for at least a week, until you see the results.

3. Laundry detergent

It is an aggressive method, which can dry out the hair a lot, but some still decide to try it. It simply involves washing your hair with laundry detergent.

  • If you use it, care should be taken not to apply too much lye or to use it very often.
  • Also, after use , a good conditioner should be applied to counteract the drying effect.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of washing powder (15 g)
  • Lots of water
  • Conditioner

How to do ?

  • Wet your hair and apply the washing powder from root to tip.
  • Rub carefully and leave for 5 minutes.
  • Remove with plenty of water.
  • Apply conditioner and let sit for 5 minutes. The detergent dries the hair, while the conditioner will counter the damage.
  • Do this every other day, and you will be able to see results after a week.

4. Lemon rinse

Lemon has many uses, including that aimed at lightening the hair. Also, the result can be unpredictable, as it will only clarify the tone of the hair. Being a citrus fruit, you have to be very  careful when using it, as it can fall on the eyes or on an open wound  and cause burns.

Ingredients

  • Juice of 5 lemons
  • 4 or 5 tablespoons of water (60 or 75 ml)

How to do ?

  • Wash hair with shampoo in your usual way.
  • When you have enough foam, add the lemon juice and massage.
  • Leave on for about 5 minutes and wash off with plenty of water.
  • Apply conditioner and leave for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Wash it off with plenty of water. You can repeat this process as many times as you want and the result will be slow but permanent.

5. Lemon mask

Due to its content of citric acid and other components, lemon juice is useful against difficult stains.

According to popular wisdom, you can also apply a mask of lemon pulp (and juice) to your hair for a few minutes, dry, to brush up the color.

This method is also quite aggressive and tends to dry out the hair a lot. It is therefore recommended to proceed with caution.

With or without dye, you need to hydrate your hair very well

It should be taken into account that  any product applied in excess can adversely affect the health of the hair. In order to avoid major damage, it is recommended to use natural remedies and always keep your hair hydrated to maintain its health and natural shine.

Applying home remedies to remove hair color  is a healthy and non-invasive option, which will not damage your hair and on the contrary, will strengthen it.
